NorShor Theatre

This is a vitally important project to Duluth. And it’s very complicated. From securing financing  to establishing a sustainable business plan, to working with the architects and city officials, Brian has been hands-on throughout the entire process. We are so grateful for his guidance, creativity and expertise as we move through the challenging redevelopment process.
– Christine Gradl Seitz, Executive and Artistic Director, The Duluth Playhouse

The NorShor Theatre sits in the center of the city, and in the heart of many Duluth residents. This beloved theater has presided over Superior Street for more than 100 years. Its early years brought celebrities, celebration, and live performances. As the years unfolded it was host to “talkies,” local musicians and artists, and ultimately a slow seedy decline.

In 2010 the City of Duluth made a bold move by purchasing the landmark NorShor Theatre and surrounding real estate. The vision was to return the NorShor to its grand status as a vibrant cultural center — serving the needs of the arts, dance, theatre and musical organizations from across the region.

In 2012 developer Sherman Associates and the Duluth Playhouse joined forces to oversee the transformation and future management of the facility. This partnership — combined with leadership from the City of Duluth, and public and private support — will create a fully renovated and accessible, state-of-the-art, 700-seat facility. The new NorShor Arts Center will be the toast of the town, embracing a new life as an exceptional venue and destination for the finest in arts, education, and entertainment.
